The destruction of a Mage-Lord

Last we left off our heroes were travelling in the catacombs and tunnels found beneath the burnt Temple of Lathander in the town of Dagger Falls. They had just fought off a small group of the nightshade creatures in a large mushroom ring.

The group headed off towards the north west and Lhaenir and Beltan started feeling strange emanations from the tunnel ahead. Emanations that felt like the magics of the Underdark, so they decided to turn and head in the other direction.  Once back in the mushroom chamber, they head east instead and quickly found their way forward blocked by a huge tangle of thorny, spiky plants. Using a torch, they set it ablaze and retreated until the air cleared.

Afterwards they continued forward, killing the lone nightshade that was posted on the other side of the thorn wall. As they moved forward they came to the entrance of a worked stone complex. As they entered a watch dog moved to attack them, but Tynara quickly subdued the animal and gave it some food.

They explored the complex and found the Mage-Lord’s plant cultivation room, and his secret library. They found out that Colderan would use the life force of the sleepers to create the nightshades. In the process of discovering this, they killed Colderan’s familiar, alerting him to their presence (at which point he cast a couple of defensive spells). They then found the chamber of yet more sleepers who had succumbed to the Dream Fever.

They then moved the altar room that Colderan was currently in. The group started to charge in, but Colderan was quicker with his spell-casting than anticipated, causing several characters to redirect as several Jermalaines (a type of gremlin) appeared at the mage’s behest, and blocking their path to him. Meanwhile two nightshades moved to attack the party, but Tynara drank a potion of plant control and they fell under her sway.

With the help of their new allies, the group quickly cut through the Jermalaines, but not before Colderan managed to cast a Wraithform spell on himself, making himself incorporeal and susceptible only to attack from to magic weaponry. Good thing they had the sword that was designed to kill mages (and a magic dagger they had found in a pit with a slime in it). With those two weapons in hand, Lina and Lhaenir were able to fell the Mage-Lord.

In our next session we will deal with the fallout of the Mage-Lord’s demise, including the presence of a nasty priestess of Cyric among the sleepers in the tomb with them.
