Curses of Night

So we just finished our first Curses of Night game, and I have to say it was pretty successful. We’re muddling our way through how things work including powers and mass combat, but I think overall it is a solid system at it’s core, and has a lot of potential with some tweaking and clarifications (but it is a beta test of the game, so it is expected that not everything is going to flow 100%). Overall my friend did an awesome job on this and it is inspiring to see. Hopefully my own game system will be as successful on its first run.

The setting is a world similar to our own but one where the things that go bump in the night really exist. While the cities of Curses of Night are in the same location of our own Tri-Cities they are entirely fictional and take the place of the real thing (check the page in coming weeks for location information). At one time the different Curses (or creature types – i.e. vampires, lycanthropes, wizards (called delvers), revenants (those brought back like Jason Voorhees or the Crow), hunters (like those found in Supernatural) and many others) fought and killed each other for many various reasons. Now though there is a Compact between the Curses and those that belong to it agree to work together for the betterment of all their kind.

Well apparently the Compact in our area was summarily wiped out, and our characters were called upon to build a new one. So everyone arrived at the site, a room set aside for the Compact members at a local convention at the Nexus hotel. On our way in we noticed some oddities, such as apparitions seemingly drawn to the hotel.

We all met up in the room, made introductions and proceeded with some small talk, though one individual fae with access to delver magics (known as Wishtwisters in this setting) arrived with models and blaring annoying party music. He was unrelentingly picked on by everyone. Eventually a full-blown Delver got into it, and they bickered back an forth before the Delver finally had a Crisis of Ego and snapped, attacking the Wishtwister albeit unsuccessfully. A hunter, after watching several playing cards magically turn into virtual throwing knives, got on edge, pulled his gun and yelled for them to stop. They did.

During all of this, various convention goers were peeking into the room every once in a while and asking about various rooms or panels. Somehow we lucked out and no one peeked in when there were obvious magical effects going on. After all we are supposed to keep our existence as supernatural creatures secret.

At one point one of the convention goers seemed….unnatural. Turns out that they were some form of cybernetic zombie. We managed to kill them, but not without he loss of one of our own, due to the cowardice of the aforementioned Wishtwister. Covenant, the Possessed (someone who has a demon possession that they have fought off but still carries their taint) shall be remembered for his sacrifice.

After the battle ended we finally got down to the business of creating our Council, but not before we witnessed a freak accident on our way out of the hotel; an air conditioning unit falling on several Star Wars geeks. Seems one of them refused to move on, which stalled our two Watchers briefly (reapers who see souls to their proper place on the other side). Afterwards we formed our Council and had our first Council meeting. We decided on some basic rules beyond the three overriding rules, and we also decided that the Wishtwister, in order to make up for his cowardice, would be forced to protect and aid the Delver he had been heckling all night.

After making the Council’s decrees known, we found out that it was a Delver that made the zombie creatures, and we now move to hunt him or her down.
